What is certain, at least to the naked eye, is the way many cities and townships along the Three Gorgess have been reshaped by the rising waters. Old quarters, untouched for centuries, were demolished within years and the inhabitants moved out to escape the rising tide. Above: large tracts of old Wushan, a city in the centre of the Three Gorges region, were still standing when I made my first trip there in June 2003. Five years later, everything was flattened to make way for a new hotel and river-side park for tourists. |
