Since 2003, tens of thousands of young workers, mostly men, have travelled from their rural hometowns to the capital city where they worked day and night to help build the spectacular new Olympic stadiums. Many arrive in Beijing with little more than a bag of clothes and the hope that the construction frenzy would provide steady work for a few years. Depending on their skills, these workers can expect to earn around US$170 to US$280 a month for a 15-hour work day, seven days a week. The money is mostly sent home to help their children finish school, or to build a new house.
