| No major architectural project in Beijing has drawn as much public flak as
the dome-shaped National Theatre designed by French architect Paul
Andreu, which the locals derisively call the "duck's egg". The building, which rises from a man-made lake like the top
half of a flying saucer, is set to be the focal point of cultural life
for a newly rich China. But Beijingers complain that it is an eyesore completely at odds with the architectural style of the nearby Great Hall of the People (pictured below) and the Forbidden Palace. |
