Rising up like an alien structure in the heart of Beijing's central business district, state broadcaster CCTV's daring new headquarters is one the more radical buildings coming up in the Chinese capital. Architects describe it as a twisted tube, or a loop folded in space. Bewildered Beijingers simply call it the "Underpants" or the "Twisted Donut" for lack of a comparable mental image. The 234m building features two sharply angled Z-shaped towers joined at the top by a gravity-defying canopy that houses 11 floors of offices and restaurants. Only the Pentagon has more office space than this continuous loop of steel and concrete designed by acclaimed Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
