The other architectural gem of the 2008 Olympics is the " Water Cube", or the National Aquatic Centre as it is officially known. In contrast to the curves and loops of the "Bird's Nest", the "Water Cube" is all sharp edges and straight lines, its rectangular shape softened only by its blue bubble-like skin. This plastic "skin" of the Water Cube is made from a membrane called ETFE, which allows the stadium to harness solar energy
for heating and lighting.
